After the first meeting on June 19, on Friday 10 of July, in the municipal auditorium “G. Tebaldini” of San Benedetto del Tronto the second meeting of the members of the Center of Excellence of “ARCA ADRIATICA” was held. That is, a project of territorial cooperation between Italy and Croatia included in the ‘Interreg’ programme that the European Union funds with the aim of addressing common challenges by finding shared solutions in the contiguous territories in various fields: environment, sustainability, research, education, health, transport, innovation and Small and Medium Enterprises. In particular, ARCA ADRIATICA deals with the valorisation of the local maritime heritage of both countries facing the Adriatic Sea and sees a great tourist potential for coastal cities boasting local ports which, for the most part, represent authentic “treasures”. Thematic tourism is in fact a growing trend in the world and, unlike the massive tourism currently dominant in the Adriatic coastal areas, it is not linked to the summer period.
The “Centre of Excellence” meeting in this period is made up of representatives of associations, economic operators, cooperatives and institutional bodies interested in the matter in many ways, and they will be providing the guidelines to implement the various steps of the project. On these guidelines the city, stakeholders and public administrations will have to work in order to activate a process of all-year-round tourism, pursuing objectives such as quality, sustainability and profitability of the destination.
The underlying basis of the process is the awareness that sustainable tourism means first of all a tourism able to last over time by meeting the expectations of residents with those of tourists, without decreasing the quality level of the touristic experience or damaging the environmental and social values of the area affected by the phenomenon. In order to understand the size and potential of this part of the sector, ENIT has reported that, in this summer 2020, 11.2% of Italians will be involved in an experiential tourism in the territory and 1.5% will practice fish-related tourism and fishing.
During the meeting, the strengths and weaknesses of the city’s tourism system were analyzed, which will then be the subject to further analysis in order to define a series of actions which, in addition to being the backbone of ARCA Adriatica, will represent the basis for a real tourism marketing plan for the territory.
